Written by Nikolai Gogol over 170 years ago, The Government Inspector has become arguably one of the most famous political comedies in world theatre. This classic satire on human vanity and political corruption has lost none of its bite or relevance for audiences today.
Somewhere in a small town, a Mayor and his cronies learn of an imminent undercover government inspection. When a young penniless nobody arrives in town, he is quickly mistaken to be the inspector by the paranoid villagers. Around this misconception, an elaborate tale of the self-seeking and corrupt political officials is told and joyfully concludes as they fall victim to their own stupidity and greed. Gogol’s masterpiece is brought to life for younger audiences to enjoy by Jam Theatre Company’s new restaging, influenced by one of theatre’s most important practitioners – Bertolt Brecht. Brecht’s Epic Theatre style lends itself perfectly to interpreting the preposterous characters of Gogol’s play, and the political sting of the story. This production uses the most requested version of Gogol’s play, translated by the prolific poet and playwright Adrian Mitchell.
The Government Inspector is satirical and funny play suitable for any young person who is studying drama, with a pre-show talk with the director and producer available at most theatres.
